Department History

The Department of Hindi was started in the year 1969. Dr. Somashekar ‘Som’ was the first Head of the Department. Having been a scholar and a devoted teacher, he laid the foundations for its future development. He was the only person, in South India to be selected by the HRD Ministry to go over to Humbltdon University, Germany as a visiting professor from 1980 to 1984. He knew German language well. He was an adept translator. He served the Department for nearly three decades and he retired in 1996.

Prof. (Smt) P. G. Pande, who was appointed as a lecturer in the year 1972, became head of the department in 1996. She was a native Hindi speaker. She added a sweet and artistic touch to the Hindi department. Prof. V. M. Dodamani joined as faculty in 1978 and served in our sister institution before retiring in 2015. Apart from these faculties, Prof. (Smt) S. T. Prakash, Prof. (Smt.) Sairabanu Navalgund, Prof. (Smt.) Shabana Haveripet and Prof. Naseem Ganjewale have rendered their precious services to the Department.

Dr. V. I. Shaikh joined the department as a Part time faculty in 1993, and was appointed as a full time lecturer in the department in 1997. He took over as the head of the Department in the year 1998. Dr. (Smt) K. V. Chandgude joined the Department in 1999 and both are serving as committed teachers in the department till date. The faculty namely, Dr. V. I. Shaikh and Dr. Smt. K. V. Changude have dedicated themselves to the cause of Hindi through participation in research activities and publications, participation in Seminars, Conferences and Workshops.

Hindi is taught as Basic as well as Optional subject to all the six semesters (B.A. I to VI Semesters.) At present 70 students are studying in the Department.

To inculcate interest among students in the study of Hindi literature along with academic excellence.

To instil in the students in depth knowledge of curriculum.

To sensitize the students about the growing job opportunities.

Department Objectives

Hindi being the national language of India, students should be motivated to study this language. Therefore the Department has the noble objective to provide good knowledge of Hindi language and literature in order to master the art of communication. It also aims to cultivate spirit of patriotism and a sense of national integration among the students. Further, the Department aims at creating confidence among students to face the examination. The Department also guides the students in literary matters, higher studies and career counselling.

Department Activities

Every year ‘Hindi Day’ is celebrated on September 14 and to mark this day several competitions are conducted, Essay writing, self composed poetry recitation, Speech competitions, analysis of books etc. The learning of Hindi Language and Literature is promoted by inviting eminent persons to deliver special lectures. Dr. Dilip Singh, DBHPS, Dr. U.R. Masuti, KUD, Prof. Prabha Bhat, KUD, Dr. Amarjyoti, DBHPS, Dr. Chitra Naik, DBHPS, Dr. Sattigeri, DBHPS, Dr.Advani, JSS College, Dr. Jubeda Mulla, Nehru College, Dr. Vidyavati Rajput, SK Arts and HSK Science College, Dr. V.M. Dodamani, Kittel Science College, Dr. Hombali, Principal, GFGC, Alnavar, Shree Wankhade, Rajbhasha Adhikari, Railways, Shree Hundekar, Deputy Director Rajbhasha, AIR are the eminent personalities who visited the department and interacted with the students.

The Department in collaboration with the Language club organised and conducted a One Day National Seminar on Contribution of Basel Missionaries to Classical Kannada Language and Literature on 05-03-2019. An online quiz was conducted by the department during 2020-21.
